Exquisite Corpse

Exquisite corpse (also known as “exquisite cadaver” or “rotating corpse”) is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled, the result being known as the exquisite corpse or cadavre exquis in French. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule (e.g. “The adjective noun adverb verb the adjective noun“) or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed.

Visual Exploration

Purpose of Lesson:  Beginning lesson to encourage collaboration, verbal discussions and critique, emphasis and review of elements and principles of design. The lesson encourages interpretation and creativity utilizing memories and verbal prompts, examines the role of chance in art works, relate different objects/subjects/forms/ideas, and learn how to problem solve.

Students are provided a surface (multi-media surface is recommended but the size of the surface can vary or be all the same size) to work on following the following prompts.  When the allotted time has expired to complete the prompt a new prompt is given to continue to apply media and mark-making to the same surface.  Allow enough time to gather materials and resources to create the illusion for each prompt.
